Step-by-step guide

Step 3 – Testing your baby’s cord blood and the first maternal blood sample

Testing cord blood

Once the cord blood unit and your blood sample have arrived at our laboratory, a technician will carry out a number of tests, including:

  • Your blood sample is tested to make sure that there isn’t any kind of virus that could affect how your baby’s cord blood stem cells are stored.
  • Your baby’s cord blood stem cell unit is tested to check, among other things, how many stem cells there are.

When we know that everything is ok, the stem cell unit is divided into two portions – one for your exclusive use in the private bank and one for the public bank. Both portions are then placed in safe storage. The maternal blood sample isn’t kept as it’s only used to check there are no viruses present.

Once all the testing is completed we’ll get in touch to tell you the results – you’ll usually get these within a week.
