Step 2 Collecting

Obviously you will need to have the Virgin Health Bank collection kit nearby when you have your baby...

The healthcare professional will use the collection kit to take blood from the umbilical cord - this usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes. It can be done before or after the placenta has been delivered, but always after your baby has been born and the umbilical cord has been cut.

UK regulations also require that a small blood sample from the mother is taken by your healthcare professional which we will then test to check for viruses or infection. This can either be taken immediately before the baby is born or just after the birth (this maternal blood sample needs to be returned to us at the same time as the umbilical cord blood sample).

The collection kit also contains special packaging to ensure that the cord blood unit and the mother's blood sample are safely transported to our laboratory. We provide easy instructions for the healthcare professional on how to take the collection, and for you on how to package everything properly.

Once that's done, you (or your partner) just call our collection hotline, it's open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and we'll arrange for the courier to collect. We'll make sure there's no hassle for you - you'll be busy enough!
